Last week I was watching that somewhat old movie of Bruce Willis “16 Blocks”. The climax scene of taking over a bus full of passengers was adequately done but then I am not about to review the movie here. What fascinated me in that scene was the variety of police gears that the police wore. As I was watching the movie Iron Man I thought: ‘The fact is so vivid how come every nation is blind to this?’ The movie is about a reformed weapon manufacture’s plight to eradicate weapons going into the terrorists hands. And like any other commodity the West is handling is handling weapons business. They have target and to meet the target for any weapon to sell somebody should fight. The poorer countries like India, Pakistan and many African countries do not realize this and keep on fighting with each other. If only the western countries stop manufacturing weapons at such mass level then at least the terrorists will be deprived of sophisticated weaponry.

Let me tell you honestly that I am not an adventure type. A typical pop corn dependant, pot bellied sofa lounger in front of TV. Never to venture out anywhere except to office and home and week ends spent totally indoors. I put everything on my budget and the traffic. Today I happened to meet a young man in his early thirties in my office having a home made lunch. Having gone through an open heart surgery a year earlier I asked him with a little bit of concern what the matter was. Because most young men would prefer hotel food than home made food – until there is something wrong. And there was something wrong in the case of this young man. He had chest pain and when consulted his cardiologist it was found out that his triglycerides were on the higher side. This on its own is not much of a worry but unless you do have a strict diet and a lot of walking. Now that young man walks 7 km per day and takes food from home. And he has started to move out of the office prompt 5.30 pm. You see even excess work can increase your cholesterol level. I hope the young man continues his good sense.

Buy items in bulk from loose bins when possible to reduce the packaging wasted.

Avoid products with several layers of packaging when only one is sufficient.

If you are doing the packaging use more of dried hay and waster papers and less of plastics.

About 33% of what we throw away is packaging

Buy products that you can reuse.

Maintain and repair durable products instead of buying new ones.

Use pot for storing water – even if you have to filter it, do so and then put it in the pot.

Insist on paper cups when ordering beverages in hotels.

If you to have to scribble on a paper cut it into four pieces and use it four times in stead of only once.

These are days of online and email communications – hence avoid taking unnecessary printouts and Xeroxes.

This is the place I visited last week; I was there for a week. I went for an Official trip, the moment I landed in Singapore had some tough time. The person who is supposed to pick me up from the airport didn’t turn up. Then I took a cab from airport to my hotel, I refreshed myself then got ready for my office at around nine’s clock. My boss was there to greet me when I went to the office. Then I went through the office visited the various departments. Singapore is the cleanest country in the world; I couldn’t find single garbage on the road. The roads were so neat, that we could see our faces. Then around the lunch time I and my boss went to an Italian restaurant to eat. The food was very good; I had mushroom spaghetti and a pizza. Then the next day I went to Sentosa Island. Ok now I don’t want to finish my Singapore experience in a single post. So I will continue this thing in my next post.

Mankind has set himself apart from the other organisms of the animal world by using his brain for analyzing the environment around him. They call this the sixth sense which no other animal on earth has it. He has been experimenting ever since he came out of the caves. In fact coming out of the cave itself was the toughest experiment that he must have done. But every time he does an experiment there is objection. When photography was invented people thought it sucked away your energy and reduced your life span. When x-ray was invented people thought radiation was going to melt your bones. I can go on with examples. The latest one is the Large Hadron experiment. The objection her is that there are chances of mini black holes appearing and earth being sucked away. One scientist explained even if such mini black holes appeared they would be so tine that they would evaporate in nano seconds. The point I am making here is whenever a new idea came resistance also came along. And mankind has passed all those resistance successfully so far. People talk about global warming so much and it is true to a great extent but even that can be overcome only with the use of the sixth sense after all. It has been the creative ideas that have brought us to this advance level so people if you can’t help the thinking process you can do well if you desist from objecting to it at least.

I mean those lovely exquisite beautiful looking laptops that are strewn around the world. The way laptop markets are going I think we may end up with a lot of use and throw trash type systems and we may have to have a real Wall-E to clean them up from the face of the Earth. Being an ancient man educated in the old system of pen, pencil and paper I never tried to learn the art of mastering the PC. Slowly I started to do so not because of the desire but my boss said he would fire me. Finally I caught up with the whole world of PC and now can not move away from my computer and that ever present Internet. Like the reluctance I had with PCs I developed the same for laptops. But having used it for the past one month I feel amazed. What a crystal clear screen and being a bifocal I do not have to strain my neck looking in an awkwardly upward slanting position. As the name suggests it fits snugly on my lap. Now I can’t do without my laptop.

After a long time of about a month of so the Indian Stock market seems to be resurging. The Sensex is trying is to stay afloat above 15000 and the Nifty is around 4500. Still my portfolio is in red only because I bought when the market was in 18000. Now there is neither negative news nor any positive news. So I expect that the market will stay neutral but then there are always the exports that are at your service to confuse you. Today I read that the market may again see 12500 before 21^st of this month. And then there are some who think that the market has made the bottom. But those who deal in stock market especially on long term basis let us not get carried away by these so called experts. We are in bear market for some time to come and any child can predict that the marker will fall down any time. Keep put at least for three years.

This is the peak Aadi season especially in Tamilnadu, the southern state of India. There are so many villages in India where this particular month – July and Augut are the festival months. This year the 2008 the annual south west monsoon is not very successful so far. The monsoon stated right on time in June but faltered after that. It rained heavily in the West Bengal and Orissa regions which are manly North East monsoon states. Today my son has a cricket match and it is drizzling here at Chennai this morning. I don’t about other countries but here in India if there is a match especially one conducted by the local cricket association you have to necessarily go to the ground and wait for the umpire’s decision whether to conduct or call off the match. This is the rule whether it is a school match or national level match. My son has to go all the way to ground lugging his huge kit bag and wait and wait and wait. Occasionally I have accompanied him in the past and find that often the umpires take their own sweet time to decide. In this era of immediate communication facilities it is surprising to see that old procedure is still followed. It is understandable 20 years back but in this age of fastest mobile communication we are still not able overcome our ancient redundant practices. This is the basic issue that haunts this country – it refuses to come out of its shell.
